CHARLOTTE THOMPSON

Charlotte Thompson is a London-based editor, with a background in global
development, the environment, international migration and asylum issues.

Charlotte began her editorial career in Mexico City in the early 1990s when, having co-written the Cadogan Guide to Mexico, she was appointed Editor-in-Chief of México Desconocido, a bilingual monthly magazine on the culture and biodiversity of Mexico.

As a member of Global Edition, an international group of magazine editors concerned with raising awareness about environmental and development issues, she attended the 1991 FAO Conference in Rome and the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Returning to London in 1993, Charlotte became Features Editor of MediaWeek before joining the Guardian Weekly in 1994 as Assistant Editor, becoming Deputy Editor from 2004 and then Acting Editor during 2007-2008. She also hosted Guardian Weekly podcasts on global development and international affairs.

After 18 years of journalism, Charlotte spent a decade working at Morley College London as a lecturer in English as a Second Language, teaching migrants and asylum seekers who needed language and survival skills to adapt to British society. She also became Staff Governor on the Morley board.

At the same time she worked with young unaccompanied asylum seekers from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan’s Darfur region, helping them to navigate the difficulties and nuances of their new lives in London. On sabbatical in Mexico in 2023-24, she continued to work with migrants, volunteering with a Oaxaca-based NGO, founded to help ease the plight of vulnerable migrants and asylum seekers transiting Mexico.

Charlotte maintained her skills in journalism throughout these years as a freelance subeditor and proofreader for the EMEA edition of Newsweek, the Guardian and the Oldie, where she continues to work.
